Practical engagement rings

An engagement ring is a symbolic piece you will get to wear every single day of your life. While your ring is a representation of the love and devotion you share with your partner, you need to make sure it is also suitable for your day-to-day lifestyle.
An active life needs a practical ring that can withstand the pressures of your frequent tasks.
While wearing your ring each day will be a heartfelt representation of your romantic commitment, it also makes it vulnerable to life’s general wear and tear. If you wear your ring every day, it’s bound to experience a lot of situations that can jeopardise its quality.
If you have a favourite hobby that requires you to use your hands, like a sport or gardening, or a hands-on career that can be tolling physically, you need a practical ring that can rise to the challenge of your lifestyle.
Are you looking for practical engagement ring features? Here’s what we recommend you look for!
Choose a hard stone
Firstly, it is vital to make sure you will be wearing the right stone. While no stone is entirely safe from damage, diamonds are your best choice. As the hardest known natural material, diamonds are the most durable choice for engagement rings.
For a practical engagement ring, diamonds should be your top choice of stone! Diamonds are ranked a ten on the Moh’s scale, making it incredibly hard compared to other engagement ring stone choices such as a sapphire or ruby. Due to their complex properties, this stone is ideal for everyday wear, withstanding the expected bump and knocks of a practical lifestyle.
Go for diamonds with no corners
When it comes to diamonds, there are a variety of diamond shapes and cuts you can go for. While the different cuts are enchanting, they aren’t all considered practical. You should look out for the cuts that boast sharp points and corners to produce their lovely silhouette.
Defined diamond cuts such as hearts and teardrops have sharp points which can snag and get caught in clothes and other materials. This can be a concern if you often work with different objects.
Instead, opt for a smoother shape. An oval or round engagement ring offers a gentle figure with no points, minimising the chance of your diamond getting caught up.
Opt for plain band rings and settings
If it is a practical ring you desire, simplicity is best. Keeping diamonds limited by not going beyond the centre stone is recommended as bands and settings with smaller diamonds create more loss opportunities.
This is especially true for pavé settings where smaller diamonds are only secured by small metal prongs that can be easily worn down and dislodged.
By opting for a plain band without the bells and whistles, you won’t need to worry about any side stones falling out. A simple band limits any chance of featured stones falling out. Diamond solitaire rings are ideal for this as they let the main diamond shine without distraction or risk from other diamonds.
Consider the height and setting
Just like the diamond cut, you need to consider how dramatic your setting is. The higher the setting, the more likely it will get caught in gloves, clothes, and more because it is more of an obstruction. On the other hand, the fewer prongs, the more susceptible it is to being knocked and loosened.
For the most practical of rings, a bezel set ring is recommended. This setting offers a protective metal rim tracing the edges of a stone, creating a flushed low profile. This makes it less likely to snag and easy to avoid any dramas.
If you don’t want a bezel setting but are still worried about the security of your diamond, try going for six prongs rather than four, as it emphasises security.
Now you know what to look out for, keep this in mind when shopping for a ring to suit your practical lifestyle. A customised ring may be ideal to suit you and your partner’s needs fully.
