Your guide to buying engagement rings online

Like most things nowadays, engagement rings are no longer limited to physical stores. At the tap of a finger, engagement rings can be selected and purchased from the comfort of your home.

Easy to be kept a surprise, ordering an engagement ring online has many perks. It offers convenience and accessibility, appealing to those who want to propose but may not have access to a local jeweller or time to escape to the closest jewellery store.

While it is undoubtedly appealing, shopping for engagement rings in Australia isn’t always a fool-proof experience. For an expensive purchase, you must listen to the experts and do a little research before finalising your order.

Are you looking to buy an engagement ring? Here is our guide to buying engagement rings online.

      1. Only buy from a reputable jewellerOnly buy from a reputable jeweller

The first thing you should do is make sure a jeweller is credible. If they have a physical store, there is a good chance you can trust that they are credible. However, many online jewellers strictly operate online. While this doesn’t mean they aren’t credible, you should be vigilant to ensure they are legit by researching.

The best way to narrow this down is to check out their website. The quality can easily spot many uncredible websites and whether they are secure. This means checking for that padlock in the top corner of your browser.

Another good way to ensure credibility is to look at the business reviews. Any testimonials from a third party, such as Google Reviews or Facebook, will give you a good idea about the service and products.

Social media itself is also another good place to check. Depending on the content, you can have a closer look at the products, testimonials, other happy couples the jeweller has helped and more. The follow count and user-generated comments can also be a solid indicator of how credible the business is.

      2. Get the size rightGet the size right

Once you’ve decided on a credible jeweller online, you must narrow down the correct ring size. There are a few ways this can be done.

If you live near a jeweller, you can ask them to measure a ring that your partner often wears on their ring fingers to get the size. Use this to purchase the correct size online. Depending on the jeweller’s sizing chart, you may need to match it to your preferred jeweller’s sizes.

If you can’t physically go in and find a size to compare to, you can do the next best thing – get as close as possible with a few measuring methods. To do this, you can measure the ring they wear on their ring fingers. Particular jewellers also have a print-out you can use to measure the finger with to distinguish the right size.

      3. Explore the different optionsExplore the different options

When shopping online for an engagement ring, there is no need to rush. Unlike a storefront, there is no closing time to stay mindful of. This means you can take all the time in the world – and you should!

Shopping online makes it easier to digest the different design options. When it comes to engagement rings, there are many different styles, colours and shapes to choose from. This means you should explore your options and go through the different categories to ensure you pick the right ring.

By doing it online, you’ll find that you have an easier way of comparing your top choices in terms of design details and price.

Finding the right ring is essential. Weigh up your choices and make sure you pick the right one, as the ring may not always be possible to return online or in-store.

      4. Read the terms and conditionsGuide to buying engagement ring

Before you purchase your ring, you should explore the jeweller’s terms and conditions. As you would with any jewellery store – online or in person, you should make sure of a few other housekeeping rules. This includes making sure the diamond comes with a certificate. You will want proof that your diamond is authentic and the details of your diamond in particular.

Furthermore, it would help if you looked at the return policy. All jewellers have a different policy for returns, refunds and exchanges. Read the fine print and ensure you are happy with their terms before purchasing. With any ring, you will want to get the ring at least resized a size or so if needed.

For online stores, there are other terms to consider. While they may sell the same goods, the conditions of an online jeweller will differ from those of a physical jewellery store. This includes conditions around shipping and delivery since most online stores don’t have a physical pick-up location. You should also review the terms for payment methods and security.

      5. Order your ring earlyYour guide to buying engagement rings online

Once you are ready to purchase your ring, make sure you give yourself enough time. This means ordering the ring early.

Arranging diamond engagement rings online or in-store will always take time once it has been ordered. However, buying from an online store will take longer as it has a delivery period on top of the product waiting period. You should consider this.

If you have a particular date in mind, aim to have the ring at least two months in advance. This will give you a buffer for any delivery setbacks that may delay the ring. This means ordering at least six months in advance, giving you plenty of time before the big moment.
