What kind of engagement ring will suit me?

Diamond engagement rings are always a big purchase and if you want to make the most of it, you need to understand what kind of style will suit you. What many people don’t realise is that not all engagement rings suit all hands and fingers. It’s always best to do a little research or ask your jeweller about which shape, cut and band would work best for your hand.
For slender fingers
The key to finding an engagement ring for slender fingers is to find a style that won’t overpower them. Smaller stones and slim bands are an easy way to give slim fingers the appearance of width. Subtle round, oval and princess cut engagement rings work beautifully for slender fingers, with an elegance and charm that isn’t overwhelming.
For wide fingers
Designs that work best for wide fingers are those with a greater surface area and stones that help elongate the finger. Thick or split bands also work to increase the surface area, leaving less skin exposed either side of the centre stone. Trilogy settings, elaborate vintage styles, large stones and halo engagement rings are best in terms of surface area, but angular and asymmetrical shapes such as pear or emerald cut engagement rings will also be flattering.
For short fingers
Short fingers require a style that will help create the illusion of length. This can be done using asymmetrical or angular gemstones with a thin band. Pear, marquise or oval engagement rings work to elongate the finger, providing a unique sparkle and style that suits.
For long fingers
To give a balanced appearance, take advantage of surface area by using large stones, intricate designs or a thick band. Round stones, especially those with a halo or double halo, work particularly well with long fingers. Those with long fingers can experiment with dramatic and bold designs that wind up the finger.
